Hometown Heartbeat
Produced in 2016, this series of photographs focuses on my hometown of Bray, Co. Wicklow. The project was inspired by my growing awareness of the changes that have been occurring within the town. In recent years, businesses began to close on both the Main Street and in retail areas, causing many previously occupied buildings to become vacant. The impact of these changes was compounded by the fact that many of the buildings were home to long-standing independent businesses, places I viewed as institutions of the town during my childhood.
This project aims to document the town’s surviving and newly emerging businesses, and the people who run them. The intention of this series is to create a record of the town, allowing future generations to view it as it currently exists. Through my work I want to pay respect to the people, who through their hard work, perseverance and dedication keep the heartbeat of the town alive.
